We are excited to celebrate our Sumatran Orangutan Jambi's first birthday!

Born on June 26, 2024 to mom Tua and dad Sugi, Jambi has stolen the hearts of everyone who's had the chance to visit him at his home in PECO Primate Reserve.

His animal care team says this boy has reached so many milestones, including spending more time off Tua and exploring on his own and readily eating solid foods-- his favorites are papaya, jackfruit, honeydew, and peas.

Sumatran orangutans are listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with a population of 14,000 left on the island of Sumatra. Primary threats include deforestation and population fragmentation. Jambi’s birth is a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) breeding program to ensure the survival of Sumatran orangutans and maintain a genetically diverse population.
